Further Treeswing Development - Geocach Fail

Sunday, 12 February 2012 - -

Due to the snowy weather conditions the treeswingboys had neglected the treeswing work for a little while.

Here are some pics of the treeswingboys sledging. (from a point of view):

As you can see there was quite a lot of vibration and camera shake due to the high speed turbulence created  from our fast runs down the slope.

Today they were back at it. With the first throw of the rugby ball it went over, right over with the string too. If we hadn't been in such shock of the quick achievement we may have caught it before it pulled all the string back down.

We threw it up a few more times, not quite getting it in the right position. Then it got stuck in a branch behind. The string snapped and the rugby ball fell a little, then got stuck.

We got the blue rope and threw it over the tree, but ended up getting it over the tree in front. We managed to pull it all the way down to the ground, it was really bouncy. You could swing on it and bounce back up like a bungee cord. We tied it down to a nearby tree. Then snapped some of the branches.

We had a rest. Then both treeswingboys pulled on the end. We had to put both our weight on it to stop it from shooting back up. Nh was just saying that it will get to a snapping point soon.  SNAP! It cracked off completely about half way up the main trunk.

Then a muggle came so we deployed. We looked at the golf slope, it was still snowy and had a few people sledging on it. We walked past the treehouse. It had the green markings on it, a number 55 and a slash on each trunk.

We went back to the treeswing, collected the rope and camouflaged the snapped branch within the others at the bottom. We went back to the car to look for a geocach.

Nh had a new phone app that was recommended by all the geocachers that used it, they thought highly of it and said it was even better than the £6 official app. Nh looked up the heath cache, as we have attempted to find this cache a few times now. It located it and showed the compass.

We drove to the location and the compass updated. We then followed the compass into the wilderness. It seemed to lag a bit and wouldn't point us in the right direction. We got to one place that was within 8m and then the compass said we were 30m out. It kept on changing. It looked like it couldn't track our location properly, just like the official app.

We searched for a while but couldn't find anything. We decided to test the app and put it on the trickier cache, as we knew where it should take us. We went to the location and it said we were 100m away and it was in the opposite direction. It then said we were 1.5km away. It didn't want to work.

We gave up and called it a day. We will have to get rid of the 130+ chargers, vinegar and salsa another day.

2012 Movie Awards
1. Chronicle - 9.2/10
2. The Sitter - 8/10
3. The Darkest Hour - 6.9/10

At the cinema we saw the ginger hair girl who we both laughed at, as she now features in our treeswingers page. We really enjoyed the film and rated 9.2, but was slightly disappointed with the predictable ending.

On monday we went sledging as the roads were clear and safe to use. We headed to the golf course and tried the duo sledging with Nh at the front and Benniboy at the back, unfortunately this didn't work and we embarrassingly went down the hill considerably slower than the rival kids. So we decided to use the bum sledges and go solo for a bit. We also practiced going over some ramps but couldn't seem to get very good air. We thought we would give the duo sledge a final go with Nh at the back and Benniboy at the front, to our amazement we rocketed down the hill. We had numerous goes on the hill and just as we were about to go 2 young treeswingers challenged us to a race. They had about a 2 second head start and took a slight lead but we gained momentum fast with Nh and benniboy both pushing with their arms. We raced past them and easily won the race, probably going the fastest we had been. We checked the wilderness before heading off to the cars.

We decided to do some drifts in the car park for about 10 minutes before heading off. Cinema will have to be postponed until half term as Nh has overtime and benniboy has Uni work/exams.

The sitter - Treeswing antics

Saturday, 28 January 2012 - -

The treeswingboys saw the first official film of 2012 - The Sitter, on Tuesday. We had seen "The Darkest Hour" online, this was the first non cinema movie. We did some laughing gas before watching it and after too.

We had been to the treeswings and were trimming the branches blocking the treeswing branch. While performing the tree trimming we managed to get the claw stuck in a Y shape tree. After countless strategies and tugging we couldn't get it down. It was like it had glued itself to the tree.

We came on the weekend. On the way to the treeswing area we saw a man sawing a log, he was a proper tree surgeon. We then came across some thin rope tied to trees in a circles around a tree in the middle with a 49 write on it in green pen. It looked like the tree surgeon had marked it for cutting down.

The rope and claw were still there. We used the pliers to cut off the rope attached to the stuck claw. As thee were a lot of muggles and the tree surgeon we deployed back to the car. We looked up the heath cache and went to find it.

We turned on the compass on the app. It didn't seem to work. After walking around for 10 minutes it got an accuracy of 25m at best, so it was impossibly to find the cache actual location. We went down town and got some treeswing supplies. We got some gloves from the pound shop, 4 pairs of regular gloves and 1 pair of extra grippy gloves.

We went back to the treeswing. We continued to trim branches. Then as usual we got another thing stuck up a tree, this time it was the volleyball.

We eventually got it back down, by basically snapping the branch it was attached to. We then got down a few more branches. Near the end we used the club to throw the blue rope up, then of course we got the club stuck. We tried getting it down, it was dark and we were tired. We hid the rope and left it till tomorrow.

Treeswing progress - Muggling

Monday, 23 January 2012 - -

Benniboy had thought of an ingenious idea for getting the treeswing rope up easily and quickly. We went to the treeswing area. Benniboy had some light, thin rope and his throwing mini rugby ball. He tied the light rope to the ball and then threw it over the treeswing branch on his third try. We then attached the blue rope to the light rope and pulled it over the branch. Done.

Only problem was that it was too far right and not in the centre. It was too high to shuffle it across. We decided to throw the light rope up again but this time in the centre. Benniboy had many attempts but the rope kept on getting caught in the many small branches in the way.

Every time it got stuck we used the opportunity to snap the annoying branches. We must have taken down four branches that were in the way. There were still some high branches left. Benniboy couldn't get the ball back over, his arm was now tired. We retired and went to check on the local cache.

There had been a few clans of muggles during our treeswing studies, some going very close to the cache location. We checked the cache, you could smell the pong of garlic polluting the surrounding location. Nh opened it and it reeked. Nh had some stink bombs. We placed one inside the container and cracked it, then sealed it back up - containing the horrid smell.

We put it back, after some hiding from the many muggles that day. We then deployed back to the car.

We found a nearby cache on the phone app. It took us past the bridge with the big bump, that the vectra had previously jump over at 80mph or so. We went over it in the miata around 60mph. We then parked up, then realised we would have to walk across a forbidden farmers field. We re parked and then walked around 1.5km to the cache. We had to walk across 2 field and one wilderness.

In the wilderness there were quite a few huts:

When we finally got to the cache location it was getting dark and we thought there could be no muggles about now. But to our surprise there were still many muggles scouting the area. We managed to get the cache and look inside.

It was a quality cache, had the usual stuff inside. We spent a good 10 minutes trying to find a place where there were no muggles. Then we unleashed the spaghetti and vinegar. We took it back to the location, then at the last minute added a stink bomb to the camouflage bag it was in.

We deployed back on the long walk to the car. We went back to the wilderness and then cracked open 10 chargers.

Geo-muggles continue..

Saturday, 21 January 2012 - -

The treeswingboys met at Nh's home ground. They searched for nearby geocaches using the phone app. We found one opposite a fellow comrades house. We parked up in the empty car park and used the compass app to take us to the cache location. We found it in no time and set out to uncover the small cache. It was somewhere in a tree. We spent the usual 5 minutes not finding anything then, for the third time, Nh found the actual cache.

It was a small film container cache. All it had was a rolled up log book and small pencil. Nh had brought some salsa sauce. He opened it and squelched the contents into the small container. He shoved the log book and pencil back in and then hid it back in the crack in the tree.

We deployed back the car and went to Subway. We then bought some 13p vinegar and some tinned spaghetti. We looked up another cache and used the navigation to tell us where to drive. It ended up telling us to go in cirlces, we then realised it was trying to get us to drive into the park. We parked outside and ventured into the dark park. We saw a jogger with a headlight.

We found the cache location, but there was a pub right next to it. The staff were a out the back and have a clear view of us. There was a chef smoking outside. We had walked up and down 3 times and he was definitely getting suspicious. So we aborted the mission.

Trickie cache found and muggled

Tuesday, 17 January 2012 - -

After the decoding of the trickie cache it was time to find it. Benniboy had downloaded the official geocache app for his phone, this allowed us to be taken right up to the cache location using gps. We tapped in the coordinates and followed the compass. We knew it was somewhere in the middle of the wilder near the treeswings.

We walked around the back of the treeswings, then the compass said 50m west. We followed it as the distance decreased to 45m, 32m, 19m, 5m. It was accurate within 3m. The clue was that it was in a place where lightning shouldn't strike twice. The location was right at the tip of a tree that had been struck by lightning.

It was pitch black, we used the torch and phone light to look for the cache. We spent 10 minutes searching in every hole and under every log. We tried looking in the trunk. We were close to giving up till daytime. Then Nh exclaimed "Found it". It was a few metres out from the gps location, shoved under the tree base, with some logs on it.

We deployed back to the car. On the way back we saw a bright torch on the field. It was the dog walker that had knocked on Nh's car window to see if he was okay, after a laughing gas session. We must have looked suspicious coming out of the dark wilder in the freezing cold.

We got back to the car and opened the box. There wasn't anything good, it had all been taken. There was just the log book and some rubbish toys. We decided to put in 9 empty chargers and some papa's garlic. The only thing was we didn't have any empty chargers, so Nh would have to do 9 more.

Benniboy dispensed them into the balloon, while nh inhaled them. We went through all 9 in no time, one was wasted due to Nh being too high to capably hold the balloon and another being laughed out. We opened the garlic and it came out in two blobs, it must have frozen in the car. We then placed the chargers on top neatly.

We put the toys back in. Nh framed the Black Rabbit in the log book and placed it on top of the toys. We sealed it up and took it back to the hiding location.

Trickie Geocach code cracked

Sunday, 15 January 2012 - -

Benniboy did it. He thought he would have a quick look at the sign again. He saw the phone number and noticed there were the same amount of letters in the code. He matched the numbers to the letters, put them in the formula and then put the coordinates in the map generator. The location came up in the middle of the wilderness:

The next time the treeswingboys meet this geocache will be muggled!!
